Heat Risk and Psychotropic Medication Safety for New Jersey
This 2-hour CE course trains mental health clinicians and direct care staff in New Jersey programs to meet the specific requirements of N.J.A.C. 10:37-6.53, focusing on psychotropic medication–related heat risks, client counseling and education, documentation, caregiver involvement with consent, and annual heat-related awareness protocols for clients, staff, and family members. Instruction includes clinical rationale, regulatory interpretation, structured workflows, and documentation templates to support audit readiness and quality client care.

- Recite the key elements of N.J.A.C. 10:37-6.53 and related regulations regarding medication education and counseling requirements.
- Explain heat-related responses and how psychotropic medications interact with thermoregulation.
- Deliver client-centered medication counseling that includes heat-related precautions and required elements of documentation.
- Provide and document individualized written medication information in plain language.
- Apply procedures for involving caregivers/family members with client consent.
- Implement the annual “heat related problems” awareness program mandated prior to May 1 each year
