The credential of Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) is awarded through the Florida Certification Board. To apply through the Florida Certification Board (See board for all complete list of requirements):
- CAC applicants must hold a high school diploma, general equivalency degree or higher.
- CAC applicants must have the following work-related experience:
If HS diploma or GED: 6,000 hours
If AA or Vocational degree: 5,000 hours
In Non-related BA degree: 4,000 hours
If related Masters degree or higher: 2,000 hours
- CAC applicants must complete 300 hours of direct supervision. A minimum of 10 hours must be documented in each of the professional practice domains.
- CAC applicants must pass an exam through the Florida Certification Board.
The CAC designates competency in the domains of Clinical Evaluation (25 hours); Treatment Planning (15 hours); Counseling (30 hours); Case Management and Referral (10 hours); Client, Family and Community Education (10 hours); Documentation (10 hours); Ethical and Professional Responsibilities (30 hours), Understanding Addiction/Treatment Knowledge (70 hours) and Application to Practice/Professional Readiness (70 hours).
This course will meet the training requirements of the Professional Readiness domain. In this course, we will explore the care for the caregiver, de-escalation, ethical decision making, individual, group and family counseling techniques, laws governing privacy,confidentiality and HIPAA, cultural competence, management and leadership skills, medication-assisted treatment, models of treatment, observation and communication skills,rules and regulations, HIV (4 hours), domestic violence (2 hours)supervision techniques, research, and alternative therapies.
