The credential of Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) is awarded through the Florida Certification Board.  To apply through the Florida Certification Board (See board for all complete list of requirements):

 

  • CAC applicants must hold a high school diploma, general equivalency degree or higher.
  • CAC applicants must have the following work-related experience:
    If HS diploma or GED:  6,000 hours 
    If AA or Vocational degree:  5,000 hours
    In Non-related BA degree:  4,000 hours
    If related Masters degree or higher:  2,000 hours
  • CAC applicants must complete 300 hours of direct supervision.  A minimum of 10 hours must be documented in each of the professional practice domains.  
  • CAC applicants must pass an exam through the Florida Certification Board.  

The CAC designates competency in the domains of Clinical Evaluation (25 hours); Treatment Planning (15 hours); Counseling (30 hours); Case Management and Referral (10 hours); Client, Family and Community Education (10 hours); Documentation (10 hours); Ethical and Professional Responsibilities (30 hours), Understanding Addiction/Treatment Knowledge (70 hours) and Application to Practice/Professional Readiness (70 hours). 

This course will meet the training requirements of the Case Management and Referral domain.  In this course, we will explore growth and development, addictive process, assessing mental health and substance abuse and other addiction behaviors, clinical evaluation of substance abuse, client engagement, appropriate levels of care and referrals, detoxification, general diagnosis frequently used with substance abuse clients, motivational interviewing, biological assessments and dual diagnosis.
