Motivational interviewing is a counseling approach designed to facilitate and engage intrinsic motivation within the client in order to change behavior. The course curriculum explores this approach which will enable CRPS professionals to practice and refine techniques that encourage clients to articulate personal goals and explore their motivations for recovery. This course is vital for those in peer support roles, as it strengthens their ability to support clients’ journey toward sustained recovery.
This course is approved by the Florida Certification Board for those seeking a Certified Recovery Peer Specialist credential. It meets the 4 hour requirement for the Motivational Interviewing Domain.

- Develop Client-Centered Counseling Techniques: Participants will learn to implement client-centered approaches to counseling that prioritize the client’s perspective and experiences. This objective includes mastering the art of non-directive counseling, recognizing the client’s needs and values, and adapting strategies to fit the individual client.
- Enhance Empathetic Engagement and Active Listening Skills: Trainees will focus on improving their ability to empathize with clients and practice active listening. This involves understanding and reflecting on the client’s feelings and thoughts without judgment, which supports the building of strong therapeutic relationships and effective communication.
- Foster Techniques for Effective Behavior Change and Treating Resistance: The course will equip participants with strategies to effectively encourage behavior change and address client resistance to change. This includes training on how to identify stages of change, appropriately tailor interventions, and use motivational strategies that align with the client’s readiness to change.
- Strengthen Skills in Building Rapport and Supporting Client Self-Efficacy: Participants will learn to build rapport quickly and effectively, creating a comfortable environment that fosters open communication. Additionally, the course will teach methods to boost clients’ confidence in their abilities to achieve desired changes, thereby enhancing their commitment to the change process and improving outcomes.
