Ethical standards both prescribe and prohibit specific behaviors on the part of the professional. The responsibility for ethical practice and identifying ethical breaches rests with the addiction counselor.
The Florida Certification Board approves this course and meets the 4-hour requirement for the Ethical and Professional Responsibilities Domain for the initial application for the CBHT credentials. - Understand ethical principles and standards relevant to substance abuse counseling: Participants will gain an understanding of the ethical principles and guidelines outlined in professional codes of ethics, such as those established by the National Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC) or the American Counseling Association (ACA). They will explore key ethical concepts such as confidentiality, informed consent, boundaries, dual relationships, cultural competence, and duty to report, and how these principles apply to the practice of substance abuse counseling.
- Develop awareness of ethical decision-making processes in substance abuse counseling: Participants will learn how to identify ethical dilemmas and conflicts that may arise in substance abuse counseling practice and develop skills in ethical decision-making. They will explore various models and frameworks for ethical decision-making, such as the ACA’s ethical decision-making model or the NAADAC Decision-Making Model, and learn how to apply these models to resolve ethical issues effectively and ethically in their practice.
- Enhance understanding of legal and regulatory requirements in substance abuse counseling: Participants will gain knowledge of the legal and regulatory requirements governing substance abuse counseling practice at the federal, state, and local levels. They will learn about relevant laws and regulations related to confidentiality, privacy, mandated reporting, licensure, scope of practice, and professional liability, and how these requirements impct their practice. Participants will also learn about the role of professional organizations and credentialing bodies in setting standards for ethical practice and professional conduct in substance abuse counseling.
- Foster professional identity and responsibility in substance abuse counseling: Participants will explore the importance of maintaining professionalism, integrity, and accountability in substance abuse counseling practice. They will examine the impact of personal values, biases, and countertransference on ethical decision-making and develop strategies for managing ethical challenges and maintaining boundaries in their relationships with clients, colleagues, and other stakeholders. Participants will also learn about the importance of ongoing professional development, supervision, consultation, and self-care in promoting ethical practice and professional growth as substance abuse counselors.
