Investigating ASAM Levels and Criteria
This course provides an overview of the ASAM Criteria and its role in substance use disorder assessment, treatment planning, placement decisions, continued stay review, transfer, and discharge planning. Participants will examine how ASAM levels of care are used to match individuals with the appropriate intensity of services based on clinical need, functional status, risk level, recovery environment, and readiness for change.
Course Objectives
- Describe the purpose of the ASAM Criteria in substance use disorder assessment and treatment placement.
- Identify the major ASAM levels of care across the substance use treatment continuum.
- Explain how multidimensional assessment supports individualized treatment recommendations.
- Recognize clinical factors that influence placement, continued stay, transfer, and discharge decisions.
- Discuss the relationship between client risk, functioning, readiness for change, recovery environment, and level-of-care determination.
- Apply ASAM concepts to support clinically appropriate, least restrictive, and medically necessary care recommendations.
- Identify documentation considerations when supporting ASAM-based placement and treatment planning decisions.
- Explain the importance of reassessment as client needs, risks, and recovery progress change over time.
