Infection Control in the Oral Health Care Setting (2-Hours)
Infection control is essential to safe dental care. Dental healthcare personnel may be exposed to blood, saliva, aerosols, sharps, contaminated instruments, and environmental surfaces during routine practice. Proper infection prevention procedures help reduce the risk of disease transmission and protect patients, staff, and the public.
This course reviews key infection control principles for dental settings, including Standard Precautions, disease transmission, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, instrument sterilization, surface disinfection, dental unit waterline maintenance, waste management, occupational health, exposure response, and written infection control protocols.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Describe the regulatory and professional foundations of infection control in dental settings.
- Explain the chain of infection and common modes of disease transmission in dentistry.
- Identify Standard Precautions and Transmission-Based Precautions used to prevent cross-contamination.
- Describe proper hand hygiene practices for dental healthcare personnel.
- Explain appropriate selection, use, removal, and disposal of personal protective equipment.
- Discuss environmental infection control procedures, including surface disinfection and barrier use.
- Describe proper cleaning, packaging, sterilization, storage, and monitoring of dental instruments.
- Explain basic dental unit waterline maintenance and water quality considerations.
- Identify safe handling, storage, and disposal procedures for sharps and regulated medical waste.
- Summarize occupational health protections, immunization recommendations, and exposure response procedures.
- Recognize common infection control deficiencies and strategies for maintaining compliance.
