The course on readiness to practice in substance abuse treatment provides a comprehensive overview of essential skills and knowledge for effective clinical practice. We will explore diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders, including the latest updates from diagnostic manuals such as the DSM-5, as well as placement criteria for determining appropriate levels of care for clients.
This course is approved by the Florida Certification Board for those seeking a Master’s Level Certified Addiction Professional credential. It meets the 20-hour requirement for the Application to Practice Domain.
This course will award 20 continuing education hours.

- Understand and apply diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders according to current diagnostic manuals such as the DSM-5 and ICD-11, including the ability to differentiate between substance abuse and dependence, as well as other related disorders.
- Evaluate the strengths and limitations of various diagnostic and placement criteria used in substance abuse treatment, considering factors such as reliability, validity, cultural relevance, and appropriateness for different populations and settings.
- Analyze the continuum of care in substance abuse treatment, including prevention, early intervention, outpatient treatment, intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), partial hospitalization programs (PHPs), residential treatment, and aftercare, to determine appropriate levels of care based on individual client needs and treatment goals.
- Develop cultural competence in substance abuse treatment by exploring cultural factors influencing substance use patterns, treatment-seeking behaviors, and treatment outcomes among diverse populations, and implementing culturally responsive screening and assessment methods to ensure equitable and effective care for all clients.
