Counselors are often called upon to provide education about the disease of addiction, its causes and its consequences to clients, their family members and the community at large.
The Florida Certification Board approves this course and meets the 10-hour requirement for the Client, Family, and Community Education Domain for the initial application for the CAC credentials. Moral development refers to the process through which individuals acquire and internalize moral values, beliefs, and principles that guide their behavior and decision-making. This concept, popularized by psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg, outlines a series of stages through which individuals progress in their understanding of morality from childhood to adulthood. Kohlberg’s theory of moral development is based on the idea that moral reasoning evolves over time as individuals confront increasingly complex moral dilemmas and challenges.
Kohlberg proposed six stages of moral development, grouped into three levels: preconventional, conventional, and postconventional. In the preconventional level, morality is understood in terms of obedience and punishment or individual self-interest. Children in this stage base their moral judgments on avoiding punishment or seeking rewards. As individuals progress to the conventional level, they begin to internalize societal norms and rules, valuing conformity and social approval. Morality is defined by adherence to laws and rules set by authority figures.
In the postconventional level, individuals develop a more nuanced understanding of morality, based on universal ethical principles and individual rights. They begin to question societal norms and rules, recognizing that ethical principles may conflict with legal mandates. Morality is viewed in terms of abstract principles such as justice, equality, and human rights, rather than adherence to social conventions or rules.
Substance abuse professionals can play a role in supporting moral development among their clients by fostering a climate of ethical reflection, critical thinking, and empathy. Through individual counseling, group therapy, and skills-based interventions, professionals can provide opportunities for clients to explore and reflect on moral dilemmas, ethical principles, and the consequences of their actions. By encouraging clients to consider the perspectives of others and to weigh the moral implications of their choices, professionals can promote moral reasoning and decision-making skills that support long-term recovery and personal growth.
Moreover, substance abuse treatment programs often incorporate moral and ethical components, such as principles of honesty, integrity, responsibility, and accountability. By emphasizing the importance of moral values and character development in the recovery process, professionals can help clients cultivate a sense of moral identity and purpose that reinforces their commitment to sobriety and positive life change. Ultimately, by addressing moral development within the context of substance abuse treatment, professionals can support clients in not only overcoming addiction but also becoming more ethical, principled, and socially responsible individuals.
