Clinical supervision in substance abuse treatment plays a pivotal role in ensuring the quality, effectiveness, and ethical integrity of counseling services provided to individuals struggling with addiction. Supervision involves the ongoing guidance, support, and oversight provided by experienced and qualified supervisors to substance abuse counselors, therapists, and other mental health professionals. Through clinical supervision, counselors receive feedback, consultation, and mentorship to enhance their clinical skills, knowledge of evidence-based practices, and adherence to ethical guidelines.

The Florida Certification Board approves this course for those seeking a Master’s Level Certified Addiction Professional credential.  It meets the 16 hour requirement for the Clinical Supervision Domain.

This course will award 16 continuing education hours.

Course Objectives

  1. Analyze and evaluate various clinical supervision theories and models to develop a comprehensive understanding of their principles, approaches, and applications in substance abuse treatment settings.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in applying supervision skills and best practices through role-playing exercises, case studies, and reflective practice, focusing on effective communication, feedback delivery, case conceptualization, and ethical decision-making.
  3. Critically examine the role of cultural competence, diversity, and ethical considerations in clinical supervision, and develop strategies for promoting inclusivity, cultural responsiveness, and ethical integrity in supervisory relationships and practices within substance abuse treatment contexts.

Ms. Robertson, M.Ed., CAP, LMHC, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia. She is credentialed in alcohol and other drug counseling.

Beginning her career in the hospital setting, working in admissions, on the 24-hour unit, inpatient and IOP for both adults and adolescents, she went on to supervise a group of clinicians that went into medical-surgical hospitals to assess and place patients. She went into the outpatient setting, working with adults and families. Throughout her career, Ms. Robertson has focused on training and education through presenting live and authored coursework.
