Infection Control for Dental Professionals in California
Every year, lives are lost because of the spread of infections in hospitals and outpatient healthcare facilities. Healthcare workers can take steps to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. These steps are part of infection control. Proper handwashing, universal precautions, and knowledge can all help to lead the way to prevent the spread of infections.
This course is approved by the Dental Board of California RP Permit 6240.

1. Define the current California Dental Board and Cal-OSHA infection control regulations applicable to dental healthcare personnel.
2. Describe the chain of infection and the primary modes of disease transmission relevant to the dental setting.
3. Identify standard precautions and transmission-based precautions necessary to prevent cross-contamination in clinical dental environments.
4. Explain proper hand hygiene protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) use as mandated by California infection control standards.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of environmental infection control measures, including instrument sterilization, operatory disinfection, and dental waterline maintenance.
6. Outline the appropriate handling, storage, and disposal procedures for hazardous and regulated medical waste in dental facilities.
7. Summarize required immunizations and other health protections for dental healthcare personnel to reduce occupational exposure risks.
8. Review the correct response protocols for managing exposure incidents, including bloodborne pathogen exposures, needle sticks, or splash incidents.
9. Discuss the role and implementation of written infection control plans and exposure control protocols in compliance with state regulations.
10. Recognize common violations or deficiencies observed in dental infection control inspections and strategies to maintain regulatory compliance.
