Diabetes Management Training
This course provides direct access workers with required in-service training in diabetes management for assisting clients with diabetes in activities of daily living. Topics include dietary requirements; diabetic oral medications and adverse reactions, including hyperglycemic and hypoglycemic reactions and appropriate interventions; insulin storage; injection techniques and site rotation; foot care; laboratory testing, including urine testing and blood glucose monitoring; and standard precautions. Training is provided by a registered professional nurse, with documentation of successful completion maintained in the worker’s record.
Course Objectives
- Identify basic dietary requirements and nutrition considerations for clients with diabetes.
- Recognize common diabetic oral medications and describe possible adverse reactions, including signs of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.
- Explain appropriate interventions when a client experiences symptoms of high or low blood sugar.
- Describe proper insulin storage requirements.
- Demonstrate an understanding of safe injection techniques and the importance of site rotation.
- Describe basic foot care practices used to help prevent complications in clients with diabetes.
- Identify laboratory testing and monitoring practices related to diabetes care, including urine testing and blood glucose monitoring.
- Apply standard precautions when assisting clients with diabetes-related care.

- Course Completion Information: To earn continuing education credit, professionals must register and pay the fee for the course.
