This course reviews the difference between medication administration and assisting with medication self-administration, as well as the goals, roles, and responsibilities of unlicensed personnel in medication assistance. It reviews Tennessee laws and regulations related to medication administration but is not intended as legal advice.

Course Objectives

  1. Understand the difference between administering, self-administering, and assisting with medication.
  2. Discuss the medical terminology associated with medications.
  3. Understand the difference between brand and generic medications.
  4. Explain indications and contraindications and their significance in medication administration.
  5. Recognize Tennessee-specific regulations regarding medication administration and assistance by non-licensed personnel.

Ms. Robertson, M.Ed., CAP, LMHC, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia. She is credentialed in alcohol and other drug counseling.

Beginning her career in the hospital setting, working in admissions, on the 24-hour unit, inpatient and IOP for both adults and adolescents, she went on to supervise a group of clinicians that went into medical-surgical hospitals to assess and place patients. She went into the outpatient setting, working with adults and families. Throughout her career, Ms. Robertson has focused on training and education through presenting live and authored coursework.
