It is estimated that 60 to 75 percent of adolescents with mental health and/or substance abuse issues have co-occurring disorders. Commonly documented co-occurring disorders include conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance dependence.
This course will explore the prevalence, warning signs, specific disorders, and treatment options.
This course will award 2 continuing education hours.

- Identify difficulties in diagnosing co-occurring disorders.
- Explain the higher likelihood of substance use disorder with a mental health disorder.

- Identify components of integrated treatment (addresses both disorders).
- Explain the importance of awareness and capacity in service systems.
- Describe “co-occurring disorder” (replaces “dual disorder” and “dual diagnosis”).
- Identify common examples of co-occurring disorders.
- Explain how substance use and psychiatric disorders vary in severity and impairment.
- Describe how co-occurring disorders often result in more severe problems.
