Contraband Awareness and Search Procedures for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Professionals
It is crucial for mental health and substance abuse professionals to be well-trained in contraband awareness and search procedures to ensure the safety of the patients and staff and the integrity of the program. This course will enhance professionals in understanding and the management of contraband within their facilities. The program covers a comprehensive range of topics, including identifying various types of contraband, effective and ethical search techniques, and strategies for preventing contraband introduction.
This course will award 1 continuing education hour.

- Enhance Understanding of Contraband: Equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of what constitutes contraband within mental health and substance abuse facilities. This includes identifying various types of contraband, from substances like drugs and alcohol to unauthorized items like certain electronics or weapons.
- Develop Skills for Effective Searches: Train participants in the best practices for conducting respectful and effective searches. This objective focuses on teaching the legal and ethical aspects of searches, ensuring the safety and dignity of all individuals while maintaining a secure environment.
- Implement Prevention and Intervention Strategies: Instruct participants on creating and maintaining environments that minimize the risk of contraband introduction. This includes designing physical spaces and developing communication strategies that foster open, trusting relationships between staff and patients, reducing the likelihood of contraband issues.
- Prepare for Incident Management: Prepare participants to effectively handle situations when contraband is discovered. This involves training on crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, and the proper protocols for documentation and legal compliance, ensuring all incidents are managed professionally and safely.
