The ASAM Criteria, developed by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, is a widely used and comprehensive set of guidelines for placement, continued stay, and transfer or discharge of addiction patients and those with co-occurring conditions.

This course will give an overview of the criteria, levels of care, and best practices crafted through the use of these guidelines.

This course will award 1 continuing education hour.

  1. Discuss who ASAM is.
  2. Explore the criteria they developed for admitting addiction clients.
  3. Discuss how the various levels of care and what criteria need to be met for each.

  • Relevance: This course is designed for master's level counselors, addiction professions, and nurses who have direct client contact with those with addiction issues.

  • Course Format: This course is offered as a self-paced distance learning format (reading-based online activity)
  • System Requirements: This course is offered online. Internet connection required.
  • Course Completion Information: To earn continuing education credit, professionals must register and pay the fee for the course.  They must read the content and demonstrate understanding by earning a minimum score of 70 percent on testing materials.  The certificate of completion will be able to be downloaded after the above is completed.
