Infection Control, Standard Precautions, and Bloodborne Pathogens in Blood Collection
This course provides practical infection-control and bloodborne pathogen safety education for RNs, CNAs, nursing assistants, patient care technicians, and other healthcare personnel who perform or assist with blood collection as part of their job duties. The course reviews Standard Precautions, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, safe handling of needles and lancets, sharps injury prevention, blood and specimen handling, environmental cleaning, exposure prevention, and appropriate disposal of contaminated materials.
Participants will also review OSHA bloodborne pathogen requirements, common occupational exposure risks, steps to take following a needlestick or other blood exposure, and the importance of following facility-specific exposure control plans. Emphasis is placed on protecting both the patient and healthcare worker during venipuncture, capillary blood collection, specimen handling, and related patient-care activities.
Completion of this course provides infection-control education but does not independently authorize an individual to perform venipuncture or other blood collection procedures outside their professional scope of practice, state requirements, employer policies, training, or demonstrated competency.
Course Objectives
- Explain the principles of infection control and standard precautions as they apply to blood collection procedures.
- Identify common bloodborne pathogens, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV, and describe how occupational transmission may occur.
- Demonstrate appropriate hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment before, during, and after blood collection.
- Apply safe practices for venipuncture, capillary blood collection, specimen handling, and disposal of contaminated materials.
- Identify engineering controls and work-practice controls used to reduce exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials.
- Describe strategies for preventing needlestick injuries and other sharps-related exposures.
- Explain proper cleaning and disinfection procedures for blood spills, equipment, and work surfaces.
- Describe the appropriate steps to take immediately following a needlestick, splash, or other occupational exposure.
- Recognize the importance of timely exposure reporting, medical evaluation, documentation, and post-exposure follow-up.
- Apply facility policies, OSHA requirements, and scope-of-practice considerations to infection-control practices associated with blood collection.

- Relevance: This course is designed for RNs, CNAs, nursing assistants, patient care technicians, and other healthcare personnel who may assist with or perform blood collection as part of their job duties.
