Self-Administered Medication Training for Texas Professionals
This two-hour course prepares personnel working in Texas chemical dependency treatment facilities to safely supervise clients who self-administer medication. The course reviews prescription labels, common medical abbreviations, routes of administration, drug-reference resources, medication storage and handling, documentation responsibilities, and appropriate responses to medication errors, adverse reactions, and side effects.
This training is intended for personnel who supervise medication self-administration but are not otherwise credentialed to administer medications. When completed through an online or computer-based format, the course must be followed by a documented face-to-face discussion with the employee’s supervisor to review key information, answer questions, and support application of the material in the workplace.
This course is not intended to provide medical advise.
Course Objectives
- Interpret prescription labels and common medical abbreviations.
- Identify common medication routes of administration.
- Use appropriate drug-reference resources to obtain medication information.
- Describe proper procedures for medication storage, handling, maintenance, and destruction.
- Explain documentation requirements related to supervised self-administration of medication.
- Recognize medication errors, adverse reactions, and common side effects.
- Describe the appropriate steps to take when a medication error or adverse reaction occurs.
- Explain the supervisor’s role in reviewing and documenting the required follow-up discussion after computer-based training.

- Course Completion Information: To earn continuing education credit, professionals must register and pay the fee for the course. They must read the content and demonstrate understanding by earning a minimum score of 70 percent on testing materials. The certificate of completion will be able to be downloaded after the above is completed. Refunds will be granted upon request with the withdrawal of credit for the course.
