Medical Errors Prevention in Mental Health

Medical errors comprise the largest issue facing this country with regard to health care. This course was designed to educate those in the health care industry and specifically the mental health field on the magnitude of medical errors, their adverse effects, and methods to analyze errors in an effort to avoid future mishaps.

This course will award 2 continuing education hours.

Course Objectives

  1. Describe the magnitude of medical errors and the effect on patient safety.
  2. Identify processes to approach error reduction and prevention.
  3. Identify areas where errors frequently occur.
  4. Explore factors that impact the occurrence of medical errors.
  5. Describe processes to improve patient outcomes.
  6. Identify the needs of special populations.
  7. Discuss the educational needs of clients and families.
  8. Explore what the mental health professional can do to ensure the safety of our clients.
  9. Discuss the importance of a reporting process for errors.

Leesa M. Robertson, M.Ed., CAP, LMHC

Ms. Robertson, M.Ed., CAP, LMHC, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia. She is credentialed in alcohol and other drug counseling.

Beginning her career in the hospital setting, working in admissions, on the 24-hour unit, inpatient and IOP for both adults and adolescents, she went on to supervise a group of clinicians that went into medical-surgical hospitals to assess and place patients. She went into the outpatient setting, working with adults and families. Throughout her career, Ms. Robertson has focused on training and education through presenting live and authored coursework.
