Understanding the Psychology of Catfishing (Dating Scams) and Falling for Financial Scams

When someone is scammed or “catfished,” they are often embarrassed and feel vulnerable and may not reach out to others for support when they need it most.

Anyone can be a victim of being scammed regardless of age, education, or socioeconomic position.  ‘

In this course, we will explore:

  • The psychology that causes people to be “catfished” and/or scammed
  • The psychology behind people who catfish or scam others
  • How to you bolster clients who are most susceptible
  • How to work with someone who has gone through this experience

Ms. Kaelin is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida and a Licensed Professional Counselor in New Jersey, Georgia, and Texas with over 20 years of experience. She has worked with clients with a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, parenting problems, career challenges, and coping with life changes.

Relevance and Target Audience:  This course is designed for master’s level counselors and social workers, addiction professionals, and nurses who work with adults who have fallen victim to or are potential targets for romantic or financial scams.

Course Format:  This course is offered as a self-paced distance learning format (reading-based online activity)
System Requirements:  This course is offered online.  Internet connection required.
Course Completion Information:  To earn continuing education credit, professionals must register and pay the fee for the course.  They must read the content and demonstrate understanding by earning a minimum score of 70 percent on testing materials.  The certificate of completion will be able to be downloaded after the above is completed. Refunds will be granted upon request with the withdrawal of credit for the course.
