Culturally Responsive Care in Mental Health and Addiction Recovery

Cultural competence is essential for providing safe, effective, and compassionate care in today’s diverse behavioral health and substance-use treatment environments. This training equips mental health clinicians, direct-care staff, peer specialists, and recovery professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver culturally responsive services that honor each client’s identity, background, and lived experience.

Course Objectives

  • Define culture, cultural humility, and cultural competence within mental health and recovery environments.
  • Identify personal biases and reflect on how attitudes, values, and worldview impact client engagement and therapeutic alliance.
  • Describe how structural inequities and social determinants of health shape client experiences.
  • Apply culturally responsive communication strategies, including interpreter use, trauma-informed practices, and family-system considerations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of culturally relevant assessment, treatment planning, and documentation.
  • Recognize legal, regulatory, and ethical requirements related to nondiscrimination and cultural responsiveness in clinical and recovery settings.
  • Evaluate case scenarios and apply culturally informed decision-making to improve client outcomes.

Ms. Robertson, M.Ed., CAP, LMHC, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia. She is credentialed in alcohol and other drug counseling.

Beginning her career in the hospital setting, working in admissions, on the 24-hour unit, inpatient and IOP for both adults and adolescents, she went on to supervise a group of clinicians that went into medical-surgical hospitals to assess and place patients. She went into the outpatient setting, working with adults and families. Throughout her career, Ms. Robertson has focused on training and education through presenting live and authored coursework.
