Motivational interviewing is a client-centered, directive counseling method aimed at enhancing intrinsic motivation that helps people resolve ambivalent feelings and insecurities to find the internal motivation they need to change their behavior.

This course will discuss ambivalence and its role in client motivation, overall and specific to substance abuse issues. We will explore the five basic principles of motivational interviewing that can be used to address ambivalence and to facilitate the change process. We will also look at approaches to use with clients in the early stages of treatment.

This course will award 1 continuing education hour.

Course Objectives

  1. Pharmacology of methadone and other opioid agonist medications
  2. Principles of addiction treatment and the role of methadone in treating opioid addiction.
  3. Ethical and legal considerations related to the provision of methadone treatment.
  4. Potential side effects of methadone and how to manage them
  5. Importance of maintaining confidentiality and respecting the privacy of patients receiving methadone treatment.
  6. Proper handling and storage of methadone and other controlled substances.

Ms. Robertson, M.Ed., CAP, LMHC, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia. She is credentialed in alcohol and other drug counseling.

Beginning her career in the hospital setting, working in admissions, on the 24-hour unit, inpatient and IOP for both adults and adolescents, she went on to supervise a group of clinicians that went into medical-surgical hospitals to assess and place patients. She went into the outpatient setting, working with adults and families. Throughout her career, Ms. Robertson has focused on training and education through presenting live and authored coursework.
