Understanding Dementia: Strategies for Compassionate Care
This course provides nursing, mental health, and substance abuse professionals with a foundational understanding of dementia, its impact on cognition and behavior, and actionable strategies for delivering effective, compassionate care. Emphasis is placed on trauma-informed approaches, communication techniques, and managing co-occurring disorders to better serve clients with memory impairment.
This course will award 1 continuing education hour.

- Identify the types, causes, and characteristics of dementia and distinguish them from other mental health conditions.
- Describe how dementia affects memory, behavior, and emotional regulation in clients.
- Recognize how dementia interacts with mental health disorders and impacts clinical assessment and treatment.
- Differentiate between dementia-related symptoms and substance-induced cognitive impairment.
- Apply effective communication techniques tailored to individuals with cognitive decline.
- Implement trauma-informed strategies to reduce distress and support emotional safety in dementia care.
- Understand legal and ethical responsibilities when working with clients with impaired cognitive capacity.
- Provide education, support, and resources to families and caregivers navigating dementia care.
- Design care environments and programming that promote dignity, comfort, and engagement for clients with dementia.
