This self-paced, reading-based course provides health and behavioral health professionals with the knowledge, awareness, and skills needed to deliver culturally responsive care. Participants will explore how culture influences beliefs, communication, and health behaviors; examine personal and systemic bias; and learn strategies to foster equitable, respectful, and patient centered interactions. The course aligns with the Oregon Health Authority’s CCCE domains and emphasizes practical application through case studies, reflection, and self-assessment.

This online course is fully accessible and designed in compliance with ADA standards. All written content is presented in clear language and compatible with assistive technologies.

Course Objectives

  • Identify and reflect on at least three personal beliefs or biases that may influence patient
    care.
  • Describe at least four social or cultural determinants of health that impact treatment and
    communication.
  • Apply two culturally responsive communication strategies to improve collaboration and
    patient outcomes.
  • Develop an individualized cultural competence action plan with at least two steps for
    continued professional growth.

Ms. Robertson, M.Ed., CAP, LMHC, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia. She is credentialed in alcohol and other drug counseling.

Beginning her career in the hospital setting, working in admissions, on the 24-hour unit, inpatient and IOP for both adults and adolescents, she went on to supervise a group of clinicians that went into medical-surgical hospitals to assess and place patients. She went into the outpatient setting, working with adults and families. Throughout her career, Ms. Robertson has focused on training and education through presenting live and authored coursework.
