Cultural Diversity, Sensitivity, and Competency

This course will explore how culture and stereotypes play a role in our we see ourselves and our clients.  We will explore cultural competency through cultural awareness, beliefs, knowledge, and skills.  We will examine the implications for counseling theory, research, practice, and training.

This course will award 1 continuing education hour.

Course Objectives

1. Describe an understanding of the various ethnicities in the United States.
2. Explain the histories of each population as they became part of the American way of life.
3. Explain how important diversity is when working with different cultures.
4. Identify and address unconscious biases that affect interactions with diverse populations.
5. Explore strategies for effective cross-cultural collaboration in diverse teams.
6. Develop skills to navigate and resolve conflicts arising from cultural misunderstandings.
