Understanding HIV and AIDS is crucial for mental health and substance abuse professionals because it enables them to provide comprehensive care, assess risks, and educate clients on prevention strategies. It also helps in addressing stigma, supporting mental health challenges associated with HIV, and ensuring culturally competent and ethical care, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes for clients.

This course will award 7 continuing education hours.

Course Objectives

  1. Understand the relationship between HIV/AIDS and mental health.
  2. Identify risk factors and prevention strategies for HIV transmission.
  3. Provide empathetic support to clients living with HIV/AIDS.
  4. Address and reduce stigma and discrimination related to HIV/AIDS.
  5. Enhance cultural competence in working with diverse populations affected by HIV/AIDS.
  6. Develop strategies to improve treatment adherence and coping skills.
  7. Navigate legal and ethical considerations in HIV/AIDS care.
  8. Educate clients on safe practices and harm reduction for HIV prevention.
