Effective clinical work with individuals from diverse minority groups—including those differentiated by ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, and ability status—demands both cultural competence and ongoing self-reflection. These considerations carry significant implications for counseling theory, research, practice, and professional training. This course will examine the unique needs of various special populations and guide mental health professionals in applying culturally responsive and inclusive approaches that honor cultural pluralism and promote ethical, person-centered care.

Course Objectives

  1. Define the concept of special populations within a clinical context and its relevance to mental health practice.
  2. Identify and describe key demographic groups commonly classified as special populations, including factors contributing to their clinical vulnerability.
  3. Analyze the ethical and therapeutic implications of working with special populations, including considerations of bias, access, and culturally competent care.
  4. Evaluate clinical strategies and interventions that support effective, inclusive treatment planning for diverse and underserved populations.

Ms. Robertson, M.Ed., CAP, LMHC, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia. She is credentialed in alcohol and other drug counseling.

Beginning her career in the hospital setting, working in admissions, on the 24-hour unit, inpatient and IOP for both adults and adolescents, she went on to supervise a group of clinicians that went into medical-surgical hospitals to assess and place patients. She went into the outpatient setting, working with adults and families. Throughout her career, Ms. Robertson has focused on training and education through presenting live and authored coursework.
