Elder abuse is a pervasive issue in the United States, affecting thousands of individuals who are often unable to advocate for themselves. Vulnerable adults, including elderly individuals with physical, cognitive, or emotional impairments, are sometimes mistreated by the very people entrusted with their care.

This course will explore elderly and vulnerable adult abuse, those most vulnerable, abusers, how to recognize abuse the importance of reporting.

This course will award 1 continuing education hour.

Course Objectives

  1. Define elder and vulnerable adult abuse, including types, risk factors, and common signs of mistreatment.
  2. Explain the legal and ethical responsibilities of mandatory reporters across various professions.
  3. Identify indicators of physical, emotional, financial, and neglect-related abuse in elderly and vulnerable populations.
  4. Outline reporting procedures and resources available on national and state levels for suspected abuse cases.
  5. Discuss strategies for preventing abuse and promoting a safe environment for elderly and vulnerable adults.
  6. Understand the role of Adult Protective Services (APS) and other agencies in addressing and investigating abuse.
  7. Recognize the impact of cultural and social factors on the prevalence and detection of abuse.
  8. Explore best practices for supporting victims of abuse and facilitating access to care and support services.
  9. Describe effective communication techniques for interacting with elderly and vulnerable adults to assess their well-being.
  10. Examine the psychological effects of abuse on elderly and vulnerable adults and appropriate interventions.
