Treating Individuals with Co-Occurring Disorders

Formerly known as dual diagnosis or dual disorder, co-occurring disorders describe the presence of both mental health and substance use disorders.  This course will explore the definition of terms used, most common substances, mental disorders that co-exist, symptoms, causes, and treatments for co-occurring disorders.

This course will award 1 continuing education hour.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify people’s experiences with addiction and mental illness as varying
  2. Describe co-occurring disorders
  3. Identify people with mental health disorders as more likely to have a substance use disorder.
  4. Describe integrated treatment as addressing both disorders at the same time.
  5. Identify early detection
  6. Identify people with co-occurring disorders as likely to experience more severe and chronic problems and as more vulnerable to relapse and worsening of symptoms.
