Formerly known as dual diagnosis or dual disorder, co-occurring disorders describe the presence of both mental health and substance use disorders. This course will explore the definition of terms used, most common substances, mental disorders that co-exist, symptoms, causes, and treatments for co-occurring disorders.
This course will award 1 continuing education hour.

- Identify people’s experiences with addiction and mental illness as varying
- Describe co-occurring disorders
- Identify people with mental health disorders as more likely to have a substance use disorder.
- Describe integrated treatment as addressing both disorders at the same time.
- Identify early detection
- Identify people with co-occurring disorders as likely to experience more severe and chronic problems and as more vulnerable to relapse and worsening of symptoms.
