A Drug-Free Workplace
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the purpose and importance of a drug-free workplace in substance abuse and behavioral health facilities.
- Identify common substances of concern that may affect workplace safety and employee performance.
- Recognize signs and symptoms that may suggest possible impairment in the workplace.
- Describe employee responsibilities related to reporting to work fit for duty and following facility policy.
- Understand the importance of professional boundaries when working with individuals in recovery.
- Identify workplace risks associated with impairment, substance misuse, medication diversion, and unsafe conduct.
- Explain proper steps for reporting concerns through the appropriate chain of command.
- Understand the importance of objective documentation when workplace concerns arise.
- Recognize the role of supervisors in maintaining a safe, fair, and confidential response process.
- Apply prevention, education, support, and quality improvement strategies to maintain a drug-free workplace.
This course provides an overview of the principles and practices needed to maintain a drug-free workplace within substance abuse treatment and behavioral health facilities. These settings require a high level of professionalism, safety, confidentiality, and accountability because staff members are often working directly with individuals who may be in recovery, experiencing withdrawal, receiving medication-assisted treatment, or managing co-occurring mental health conditions.
Course Objectives
This course was designed for employees, supervisors, healthcare professionals, behavioral health staff, substance abuse treatment providers, administrative personnel, and facility staff who work in substance abuse treatment, mental health, recovery, detox, residential, outpatient, or related behavioral health care settings.
