Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT): Clinical Use, Administration, and Risk of Misuse
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is a cornerstone of evidence-based care for individuals with substance use disorders, integrating pharmacologic interventions with counseling and behavioral support to improve outcomes and reduce relapse risk. This course provides clinicians with a comprehensive understanding of the clinical application, safe administration, and potential risks associated with MAT medications used to treat opioid, alcohol, and tobacco use disorders.
This course will award 1 continuing education hour.

- Describe the pharmacologic mechanisms and clinical indications of FDA-approved MAT medications for opioid, alcohol, and tobacco use disorders.
- Apply appropriate protocols for dosing, monitoring, and managing side effects during MAT.
- Identify common patterns of misuse, diversion, and polysubstance interactions among patients receiving MAT.
- Implement evidence-based strategies to minimize abuse risk, including PMP review, pill counts, and observed dosing.
- Integrate behavioral interventions and patient education into MAT programs to promote adherence and long-term recovery.
